Strive is a realistic, single-player, first person wilderness survival game that takes place in a tropical setting. The player will have to explore their surroundings and harvest resources in order to craft weapons, tools, and shelter to survive the harsh environment.
But before I go on to talk about some of the basic features of the game, allow me to introduce myself and my partner. Ethan Witt and I are developing Strive on our own with the Unity 3D engine. Ethan has taken on the position as the lead programmer for Strive, while I [Gus Dubetz] manage the design aspect of the game. The project started July 1st, 2013, and has seen much progress since.
Strive is a realistic wilderness survival game. By that, I mean that the game will not include any fantasy elements such as mystical creatures, magical abilities, or extraordinary events. Seriously. We're tired of seeing survival games that makes nature look like it was genetically augmented. Now don't think that we're making a simulator here either. Strive will be realistic, but it won't require you to clip your character's fingernails.
The player must only monitor four major stats of their character. Hunger, Thirst, Temperature, and Fatigue. The declination of these stats can be caused by numerous sources, but can also be rejuvenated all the same. While these four stats will be the player's primary concern, their overall health must also be monitored.
Crafting is a big topic of discussion when someone mentions the word survival. Strive's crafting system is inherently simple, but allows for much detail. Crafting some items may require multiple raw materials, crafted materials, and tools to create. More information will be distributed about the crafting system in a later post.
Finally, the environment of Strive will feature a wide variety of useful plants, tame and dangerous animals, and varying terrain all generated in a procedural world.
Briefly, this is a rough description of what Strive will become as we continue our development. In future posts, we will describe the additions made to the game in depth. Stay tuned!
